I ordered a new xx rig for my 29er. Can anybody give me some advice for rig tension on the various shrouds?

This is certinaly something everyone is still playing with and I'm really interested to see what others have to say here.

At the most recent event in Kingston I sailed at around 30 on the mains, 14 on the lowers and 10 on the caps. I felt a bit underpowered (I think those were my numbers, I don't have my notebook here). Trev and Marc, what were you sailing at during the racing? Your setting seemed a bit more powered and looked better upwind.

Rule of thumb, your windward primary should be just on the verge of bouncing around (like in waves). If there is more then an inch of camber, go tighter. Should prevent the mast from bending sideways (you need someone in a motor boat following). As it gets windyer, you should be looser on the caps. You should also mesure lowers by looking at the lower mast bend, not with tension. Strait for light wind, curved for windy stuff (makes the bottom of the sail flat). All of the above in correlation with different traveller hights should get something that ''looks'' good.

I think the 49er settings, scaled a bit, are a good place to start. I've never measured the XX mast bend, so let us know what happens when you experiment! But that is certainly an easy place to start. Maybe Scott Babbage has some comments on this topic? Julian, Dave or Ian?

During the CORK event, Marc and i took the 49er philosophy, just scaled back like Jen said and under strict instructions from Yogie.
When the rigs came from Europe, it seemed to me that they were set up very very tight!!

I can remember the 2nd day of CORK, (let's say 6-13 kts w/ big lulls and big puffs) what our approximate settings were: (w/ new Loos PT-1)
P: 25, C: 9, No Low Bend. Our strategy there was to go for max power. Caps probably could have been a little tighter (maybe up to 10 or 11 on the guage). Low bend can be measured the same way as in a 49er, or just take a look up the mast! Low bend is simple: more bend = flatter lower main & less effective vang. The more you pull the lowers, the straigher the mast, but that also winds up putting more tension on the primaries.

I think the strategy should always be to follow the 49er numbers. The rig dynamics are basically the same. We just need to remember that you cannot crank as much tension into the XX b/c it is carbon, as opposed to the aluminium/fiber glass setup on the 49er.

But remember, you also need to play your vang/traveller settings!
Has anyone measured forestay tension yet??

I will invite one of our best Dutch 49er sailors for my first ride. I will take all your comments with me and set up the rig accordingly with use of all the experience of the 49er sailor.

I will get back to you as soon as I have interesting settings. Hope this will be soon since my rig hasn't been delivered yet.

I don't have much to share as I'm waiting for shrouds to arrive for my rig, but what have you been sailing at? Have you been meausuring mast bend and tension?

We have been experimenting and we are finding forestay at 24, caps are not tight just firmish, D1's are pulling the mast as straight as possible down low, its going very quick in most breezes at that setting move up the fstay to 26 in the fresh

i haven't sailed the X since August, but here's what i feel:
(1) settings should resemble those of the 49ers. but you cannot put as much tension b/c the mast on the XX isn't as strong. but all dynamics should remain the same (as a startig point).
(2) rig settings: when we sailed at CORK and had pretty good upwind speed in 9-12 kts, we had about 25 on the primaries. The primaries were bouncing sligtly, which is good. our D1's or lowers were pulling lower mast as straight as possible to power up the bottom part of the sail. the caps were set at about 13. just to keep the auto rig from spilling too much. i don't think you can go much tighter. we didn't measure forestay tension, but i'd guess it was around 24. The point is that these numbers corelate exactly to what you would use on a 49er, just scaled back a little due to the fragility of the mast.
(3) we had a pretty high traveller with lots of vang to keep that leach "upright."

So these numbers are a starting point for anyone who isn't familiar with the 49er. but i would definitely say that rule of thumb is follow 49er settings. the xx rig should be set up in the same manner, just with less tension on the wires. If you don't know what they are, ask the 49er guys in your area, they'd be glad to help out.

i have exactly the same problem fot 141kg.
i think the mast is too soft for the little round of the mainsail.
on a 49er the round of the mainsail is bigger.
