29erXX North American Series

Day 2 - August 25

The wind returned to Kingston today, providing the 29erXX fleet with a nice 8 - 18 knot northerly. The northerly comes off the land in Kingston, creating a puffy, shifty, and tactical racecourse. Marc Farmer and Trevor Parekh took the lead from the start, winning 4 of the 5 races with great upwind speed. Jen Morgan Glass and Genny Tulloch used their good downwind speed to keep close to Marc and Trevor, but were only able to take one race victory, finishing 2nd in the other four races. Genevieve and Veronique Bougie-Bastien finished third, closely followed by Katja Smutny and Chris Ferguson, and fleet newcomers Alanna and Paula Foscarini.

Five 29erXXs off the start line

Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to the next 29erXX event. Even the 49er teams, with their bigger, faster boats, seemed a bit jealous. One team even waited after their final race for the XXs to finish so they could swap and try out the new boat on the way in to the dock.

The CORK officials were really pleased to see a new boat on the race course and to have held the event for us. We hope to make this an annual event. Don MacIntyre, the Race Officer on the course was quite surprised at the close elapsed finishing times of the 1st 49er and 29erXX. It was averaging out at about 5 minutes.

Jen and Genny chase Katja and Chris downwind.

Day 1 - August 24

The fleet of 5 29erXXs, provided by PS2000, was poised today to begin their first event in North America, but the wind gods were on vacation. Three of the five boats left the dock for the 11am start, only to drift around and attempt a jibing duel before returning to the dock. A few hours were spent waiting onshore in hopes that the thermal would fill. The time was filled discussing the new rig and potential small modifications to the main sail and spinnaker hoisting and dousing system.

The first race is now scheduled for 11am Friday, August 25th.
