ISAF Observation Trials wrapup
Published: Sun 22nd April, 2007
The ISAF Women's High Performance Skiff Observation Trials came to a close on April 19th after four days of sailing in very similar conditions. The MNA sailors had four days to test out all six designs in a consistent 5-10 knots and light chop. Thursday's sailing concluded with some simple rabbit-start races that were a lot of fun and were won by a variety of boats.
When the wind died around 2:30, the fleet was sent in to pack up and wrap up the event. As luck would have it, just as most of the masts were taken down and boats packed away, a nice 12-15 knots filled in. There was one 29erXX still rigged, and Kersten Beuoke took the opportunity to go out for a rip with German 49er sailor Marcus Bauer, as well as a Brazilian 470 sailor. Everyone else was jealous.
The ISAF Evaluation Committee concluded the event with a good discussion amongst the sailors about what they liked and didn't like about each boat. We will likely be seeing some changes to the designs before the next Observation Trials, where the Committee will be more focused on selecting a particular boat (this event was to determine whether or not equipment existed that would meet their specifications).
Everyone had a great time at the event and there was much enthusiasm from everyone involved, as well as other sailors in Hyeres training for the SOF. A women's skiff looks to be well received. We'll now await ISAF's November 2007 decision.
